skindeep

Alright peeps! Today I am touching on skin care. I am 50 now, FIFTY!!!! When my mom was 50, I was 20 years old and I seem to recall I thought she was old - as is typical with the selfishness of youth. Of course, ahem, today, 50 is supposedly the new 40...or so I read in many publications. The inescapable fact is that I have noticed my skin changing and wrinkles breeding at the same rate as rabbits. I admit I am the worst steward of my skin - I wash my face with soap, Dr. Brommers lavender scent to be exact. I only started using face cream two years ago - I use an Aveda face cream with tourmaline in it; please don't ask me what that means! I only use face cream during the winter and I rarely wear sun screen even though I run outside in the summer. In spite of this, for a person my age, my skin is not too bad. I don't smoke, which helps tremendously; I don't wear any make-up except for a tiny bit of blush (don't want to scare people at work in the morning with my pasty, white face) and mascara, and most days I am lazy to even put that on. I also don't eat tons of really bad food.

I don't know ANYTHING about skin care, but I truly enjoyed this post on beautiful skin by Janet. I have Janet's blog 'Gardener's Cottage' on my side bar because her blog journal is full of applicable recipes, decorating advice and beauty tips, simple living advice and fashion tips for real women along with genuine thoughts and feelings peppering all the great words.

....AND...to fulfill another New Year's goal, I took a lotions and potions making class at a local soapwork company and man, was that FUN or what. I made a whipped body butter, a hydrating cream and a body lotion using all natural ingredients, free of parabens(?) and other nasty stuff.

Happy weekend peeps!

ok, i have to ask if the first picture is you? omg, you are gorgeous and have beautiful skin! you look to be in your 30's.
tourmaline, btw is a mineral that is said to have enhancing properties. so aveda adds it to help enhance all the good stuff in that particular cream. i am a green science gal myself but they have discontinued that moisturizer (as aveda does often)and i'm down to my last container. i have no idea what i'm gonna do when i run out.
thanks for the mention and now i'm gonna go re-read that post and see what nonsense i wrote! xo janet

You do look great, Raina. Good genes, I suspect.

I have been thinking about making some of my own lotions and balms and such.

It seems whatever you have been doing is exactly right because you look great. Carry on.

Well, it appears, in your case, that 50 is the new 30! How wonderful to see your beautiful face! Ahem. Where are those wrinkles -- on the back of your head? I've come to skin care very late in the game too -- must be something about those breeding wrinkles that kicks us into action. Thanks for the link!

You are a very beautiful 50 year old! Your simple skin care routine and eating healthy is really working! :) I turned 40 this year... I don't know where the time went! I keep things pretty simple with my skin, too. I try to use natural products without the bad stuff.

You are beautiful! And I love that you don't drown yourself in make-up. I want to be just as lovely when I make it to fifty!

WOW... love the sound of your classing on making your own body care items, Raina! I think you look FANTASTIC at 50! I'll be turning 40 later this year, and better skin care is really at the forefront with those fine lines showing and the climate making my skin more & more dry. I love the Body Shop's products. But as we all know, real, lasting beauty is found within. :o) Happy Days ((HUGS))

Wouldn't have known you were 50...your skin looks fantastic. I don't do anything special either but as I approach 40, I decided to at least stop washing my face with soap. And to moisturize at least a little. That will likely be the extent of slowing the aging process!
